Behaviour problems and their treatment in dogs and cats is a relatively new area in the veterinary world. Many behaviour problems develop because of poor understanding of the importance of the early developmental stages in both species. Inadequate or inappropriate socialisation and habituation in both dogs and cats can lead to many problems such as fear and anxiety-based problems, aggression and stereotypical behaviours. In addition to this many behaviour problems can be due to a clinical problem which can cause changes in behaviour caused by underlying pain, hormone imbalances or neurological problems. Research has shown that some animals can even have an allergy or hypersensitivity to certain proteins in their diet. At Alexandra & Hillyfields Vets we are fully committed to giving your pet the best start in life and can advise on how to go about effective and positive socialising and habituation for puppies and kittens. We run puppy parties weekly at our Clevedon practice, where pups have the opportunity to play with others of similar age and form strong positive associations with the surgery. Many puppies remember what fun they had, and as they grow up, are pleased and excited to come to the vets as it was such a source of fun for them. We also have a vet who has a special interest in behaviour problems and will be pleased to talk to you about any problems that your pet might have. Follow the links to see some general advice about the more common problems, such as noise phobia, status reduction, separation anxiety and cats urinating in the house.
