Obesity is a major problem in British pets usually due to over-feeding and under-exercising. Many dogs and cats are chronically overweight leading to serious health problems such as arthritis, diabetes and liver disease. As animals get older their metabolic rate may reduce and exercise levels may also decline. This can easily lead into a vicious cycle of weight gain with poor exercise tolerance and associated health problems. The nurses at out practice are all experienced and very knowledgeable about weight loss regimes for pets. We have various specialised diets which can be used to reduce your pet’s calorie intake and still provide plenty of ‘gut fill’ to prevent scavenging and the feelings of hunger associated with reduced food intake. They can also advise on allowable treats, methods for monitoring weight loss and maintenance of a healthy diet over the long term. If you think your pet may be over weight, please give us a call and we can arrange a free check up with a nurse to weigh and assess your pet generally and if necessary advise on a weight loss program.
